To address and reverse the prevalence of HIV among female sex workers (FSWs) from both brothel-based and non-brothel-based setups, our initiative set a goal to reach 1,200 sex workers beginning in 2003. Through targeted outreach and consistent engagement, the program focused on health education, HIV prevention, and access to essential healthcare services. The objective was not only to reduce HIV transmission but also to empower the community with knowledge and resources for better health outcomes.
A key strategy in achieving this goal involved strengthening the network of peer mentors and community leaders from within the local sex worker communities. These individuals played a crucial role in outreach, offering health education, and building trust. In addition, the program provided free counseling, legal aid, and ongoing care and support to sex workers living with HIV. This holistic approach ensured that their emotional, medical, and legal needs were addressed effectively.
