Environmental Sustainability through Miyawaki Forests
Over the past two years, Aadhar Bahuddeshiya Sanstha has actively collaborated with the Gram Panchayat of Gandhi village and the Nagar Parishad of Amalner to promote environmental conservation and sustainability. As part of this initiative, two Miyawaki forests have been developed—one in Gandhi village and another in Amalner city. These green zones, also known as “Wipro Oxygen Parks,” are aimed at reducing carbon dioxide levels and increasing oxygen in the environment. The project aligns with efforts to combat climate change by creating natural carbon sinks, improving air quality, and promoting biodiversity through native tree plantations.
Miyawaki Plantation Method and Its Impact
The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native species in close proximity to replicate natural forests. This technique promotes faster and denser growth—trees grow up to 10 times faster and become 30 times denser than those planted using traditional methods. After the initial three years of care, the forests become self-sustaining and require minimal maintenance. Utilizing this approach, Aadhar planted 10,000 indigenous trees across 2 acres in Gandhi village and 3,000 trees in the open space of Vaman Nagar Colony in Amalner. The plantations provide essential habitats for wildlife, contributing to increased biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
Monitoring, Maintenance, and Community Involvement
To ensure the long-term success of these green initiatives, regular maintenance and monitoring have been carried out, including watering, mulching, and tracking plant growth. The Miyawaki forests have already shown notable progress, with visible improvements in tree height and canopy coverage. Community participation has been a key factor in the success of this initiative—local residents, school children, and volunteers have contributed actively to the planting and care processes. These efforts not only contribute to environmental preservation but also serve as living examples of sustainable community-led development in rural and urban settings.
