Bal Sangopan Yojana is a child welfare scheme implemented by the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Maharashtra. The main objective of the scheme is to provide care, protection, and support to children who are in difficult circumstances—such as those who have lost one or both parents, whose parents are chronically ill, imprisoned, or unable to care for them due to social or economic reasons. Unlike institutional care, this scheme supports community-based child care, where children are placed with relatives, guardians, or foster families to ensure they grow up in a family environment.
Under the scheme, each eligible child receives a monthly financial assistance (currently ₹2200) through the supporting organization to meet their basic needs such as education, nutrition, and healthcare. The children remain under the guardianship of the extended family or community caregivers, and regular monitoring is conducted by NGOs or child welfare institutions recognized by the state government. This allows the child to stay in a familiar social and cultural environment while also getting the necessary support for overall development.
The Bal Sangopan Yojana promotes family-based care over institutionalization and plays a critical role in preventing children from becoming homeless or neglected. It not only supports the physical and educational needs of children but also emphasizes their emotional well-being by allowing them to stay connected with their roots. By bridging the gap between families in crisis and the support they need, the scheme upholds the right of every child to grow in a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.
