'Aankur'-Nutriation Program

Children Living with HIV and Their Challenges
In India, approximately 1.5 lakh children (aged 0–18 years) are currently living with HIV, with an additional 20,000 to 22,000 new cases every year—most of which are transmitted from parents. A significant number of these children have lost one or both parents to HIV, leaving them in the care of elderly grandparents or distant relatives, many of whom are hesitant due to stigma and discrimination. These children face numerous emotional and physical challenges, such as not understanding their illness, the monotony of daily medication, recurring illness due to poor nutrition, and emotional trauma from stigma, discrimination, and the absence of parents. These challenges significantly affect their physical development and mental health.

Aadhar’s Support Through the Care and Support
In Jalgaon district, Aadhar Bahuddeshiya Sanstha has been working for over 25 years to support people living with HIV. Through the Care and Support project, Aadhar provides a range of services such as counseling, support groups, guidance on government schemes, referral services, advocacy against stigma, legal aid, and home visits. As of December 2022, 16,766 individuals are registered at ART centers in the district, with 750 of them being children. Out of these, 162 children are orphans or have single parents, living in extremely difficult conditions. Aadhar has been consistently supporting them through various interventions to improve their quality of life.

Protein Kit Distribution for Nutritional Support
Since 2020, Aadhar, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Amalner, has been distributing monthly protein kits to 40–50 orphaned and poor children living with HIV in the Jalgaon and Amalner areas. These kits help strengthen their immune systems, reduce the risk of common infections, and improve growth in terms of weight and height. ART centers in Jalgaon (Government Hospital) and Amalner (Rural Hospital) together serve around 150 orphan children. The Protein Support Project not only enhances physical health but also fosters emotional well-being by creating a sense of community among children facing similar challenges. The monthly distribution events include interactive sessions on self-care and health awareness, encouraging children to live healthier, more hopeful lives.
